Ischemia is a medical term that defines limited blood flow to the brain, and the resulting cognitive and/or motor damage. Although ischemia is an issue that can happen to any person for a number of reasons, the condition is associated with complicated and traumatic births.

During the birthing process, a baby must receive sufficient blood flow to their brain. Without proper blood flow, a baby may be injured during birth and develop complications. This issue could be the result of a medical professional’s failure to properly monitor the condition of a pregnant mother and promptly respond to issues.

Perpetrators of medical negligence could be liable for harming your family — Cullan & Cullan can help. Our attorneys are also doctors. We have reviewed thousands of birth injury cases.

Symptoms & Complications Of Infant Ischemia

The symptoms of ischemia typically arise after a baby is born, and may progress as the child ages. There are various tests that can detect the issue — ischemia can sometimes be identified in a standard brain scan such as an ultrasound, CT scan, an MRI, or EEG test.

Ischemia in newborns can contribute to cerebral palsy, neurological disabilities, and limits to an infant’s mobile and cognitive development. The complications caused by ischemia during the birthing process may vary depending on which part of the brain was affected.

Ischemia in an infant may present as symptoms including:

  • Loss of consciousness
  • Limited mobility and coordination
  • Seizures
  • Delayed development

How Medical Negligence Can Cause Ischemia

Two of the main causes of ischemia in infants are infections and oxygen deprivation. Medical professionals are responsible for preventing infection and making sure a pregnant mother and their baby are receiving enough oxygen during a birth.

A doctor who fails to ensure there is sufficient blood flow to a baby’s brain during birth, and does not respond to issues which arise, could be legally responsible for resulting damages.

Issues that can contribute to ischemia during the birthing process may include:

Ischemia Treatment

When responding to a possible infant ischemia case, a doctor may conduct surgery or prescribe medication. To treat the results of infant ischemia, a child may require long-term treatment to address a permanent disability. Ischemia can impact various parts of the brain, so treatment is different among patients. Depending on which part of the brain was affected, a patient will need physical therapy, occupational therapy for cognitive issues such as speech therapy, or a combination of physical and cognitive rehabilitation.
