Omaha Birth Injury Attorneys

Nationally-Recognized Nebraska Birth Injury Lawyers

Not all birth stories happen the way we dream they will. All parents hope for a happy, healthy delivery process, but, unfortunately, this isn’t always the case. If a medical professional makes a mistake, or if a hospital error slips through the cracks, it can result in a serious, life-altering birth injury, like brain ischemia.

Infant brain ischemia occurs when an unborn baby’s brain is deprived of the oxygen it needs to develop and thrive. As a result, the baby may develop severe developmental disorders, cerebral palsy, or neurological issues. If your child suffered brain ischemia as the result of medical negligence, we want to hear from you.

What is Brain Ischemia?

Brain ischemia is a type of brain injury in infants that occurs when the unborn baby’s brain is deprived of oxygen. When the aerobic metabolic process of the brain does not receive adequate blood flow, the baby requires immediate oxygenation. If doctors fail to provide the unborn baby with oxygen, either by moving the baby’s position, ordering an emergency C-Section, or by some other medical means, the baby may suffer lasting brain damage.

Brain ischemia may result in the following complications and symptoms:

  • Decreased sensation or numbness in certain parts of the body
  • Difficulty swallowing
  • Loss of coordination
  • Loss of movement in the limbs, often in one side of the body
  • Loss of vision
  • Vertigo

How Can I Tell if My Child’s Injury Was Caused By Medical Negligence?

Because brain ischemia occurs due to lack of oxygen to the infant’s brain, the issue can often be prevented with proper fetal heartrate monitoring. When the baby is deprived of oxygen, the baby will show signs of distress, which means the fetal heart rate will change. If medical professionals fail to monitor the fetal heart rate, or if they fail to report abnormalities in the fetal heart rate, the baby may develop brain ischemia.

Brain ischemia may also occur as the result of maternal infection, preeclampsia, placental abruption, genetic disorders, an infant heart defect, or blood disorders. If doctors fail to respond to symptoms of any of these complications, or if the doctor fails to diagnose any potential birth complications that result in brain ischemia, they could be liable for negligence.
