We Have a Unique Understanding of Medical Injuries

Brain injuries are some of the most debilitating injuries. Not only are they physically life-altering, but they also tend to be emotionally traumatic for victims and their loved ones. Sadly, brain injuries often result in permanent loss of function, whether it’s cognitive, sensory, or physical function. Brain injuries can even result in changes in personality and they often prevent the victim from earning a living, either temporarily or permanently.

Types of Brain Injuries

A traumatic brain injury, or TBI (see image below), occurs when an outside force causes damage to the brain, resulting in cognitive and/or physical impairment. As the name suggests, a traumatic brain injury is the result of a traumatic event.

In contrast, an acquired brain injury (ABI) refers to a brain injury that is not the result of trauma and also is not congenital, hereditary, or degenerative in nature.

Some of the most common types of brain injuries include:

  • Concussions
  • Contusions
  • Diffuse axonal injuries
  • Coup-contrecoup injuries
  • Second-impact syndrome
  • Shaken baby syndrome
  • Penetrating brain injuries

Additionally, brain injuries can be categorized as either closed-head injuries (such as a concussion) or open-head injuries (such as a penetrating injury). They can also range greatly from relatively mild to moderate to severe, though all brain injuries can have serious, long-term effects and should be treated as soon as possible.

Seeking Compensation for Long-Term Effects of Brain Injuries

Generally speaking, most brain injuries require extensive, ongoing treatment. Immediately after the incident, a person who has sustained a brain injury will need emergency medical attention. Victims may need multiple surgeries and physical/cognitive rehabilitation therapy that can last for years or even a lifetime. Victims may require around-the-clock care and assistance with even the most basic of tasks.

Most families are not equipped to handle the immense financial burden associated with TBI treatment, especially when the injured individual is unable to work or earn a living to his/her injury. At Cullan & Cullan, our Omaha brain injury attorneys help victims and their loved ones work to secure the full compensation they are entitled to receive for their damages. If your injury or your loved one’s injury was the result of negligence, we can help. We have secured hundreds of millions of dollars on behalf of injured victims throughout the state; let us fight for you.
