Representing Victims of Penetrating Head Injuries in Nebraska

During an open head injury, an object pierces the skull of the victim and impacts the brain, causing serious brain trauma in most cases. Like all forms of traumatic brain injury (TBI), the effects of an open head injury can vary from victim to victim but are frequently serious due to their violent and complicated nature. Should a victim suffer such an injury, their losses may last long beyond all medical procedures used to save their lives and heal their wounds.

The Omaha brain injury lawyers at Cullan & Cullan LLC know the dangers and trauma of an open head injury and the delicate nature of the brain, which can be suddenly and severely impacted by such injuries. Our attorneys are also physicians, as such, we understand the scope of losses that may result from an open head injury and are dedicated to informing brain injury victims as well as their family members about their legal rights and options when it comes to injuries caused by another party’s actions.

The Serious Nature of Open Head Injuries

Open head injuries can result from a wide variety of causes, but usually, include a high-velocity projectile or another object or bone fragment that is driven into the brain.

During an open head injury, the brain suffers several different types of injuries. High velocity penetrating objects will lacerate the brain as well as crush brain tissue and the shock wave of the impact will cause stretch injuries, making a cavity in the brain that is much larger than the object that initially penetrated it. Low velocity penetrating objects and bone fragments that break off from the skull and enter the brain will not create these large cavities, but the damage caused is just as serious. Just like closed head injuries, this form of TBI will cause all the same forms of damage, but will also present the risk of infection and hemorrhaging from the wound.

Dealing with the Losses from a TBI

While an open head injury tends to have a high rate of death, especially those that involve a high-velocity injury, there are many that survive every year, only to have to deal with a long list of complications. Brain damage can often cause a victim to experience changes in both emotional and mental capacity and control, as well as numerous physical difficulties. Because of the serious damage that can be caused, victims will often suffer from respiratory problems, epilepsy, vascular problems, and many difficulties with physical capabilities.

To properly deal with the immediate and continual problems that are caused by an open head injury, emergency medical care and surgery will be needed to save a victim’s life and prevent the injuries from worsening. Afterward, therapy and rehabilitation services will often be needed to help a victim recover as best as they can from their injuries. However, many victims are left with losses so severe that they will need constant medical care to deal with day-to-day needs.
