What Is a Chemical Burn?

Also known as caustic burns, chemical burns occur when a person comes into contact with or inhales a corrosive chemical substance, namely strong bases and strong acids.

What's Different About Burn Injury Cases

Unfortunately, these chemicals can be found in many household products, such as:

  • Ammonia
  • Bleach
  • Furniture polish
  • Battery acid
  • Drain and toilet bowl cleaners
  • Dishwasher and laundry detergents
  • Denture cleaners
  • Teeth-whitening products

It is very common, therefore, for a person to suffer a chemical burn in the home. Chemical burns are most likely to occur in factories and businesses, however. This is especially true among employees who are required to work with strong chemicals every day.

Chemical Burns: Signs and Symptoms

Depending on the degree and type of chemical burn, those injured may experience one or more of the following symptoms:

  • Blisters
  • Rashes
  • White burns
  • Abdominal pain
  • Bluish or bright red lips
  • Dizziness and nausea
  • Fainting/losing consciousness
  • Painful, burning sensations
  • Difficulty breathing
  • Symptoms of an allergic reaction

Please note that chemical burns can affect the skin, nails, eyes, respiratory system, and other internal organs.

Treatment for Chemical Burn Injuries

Chemical burn treatment looks different for everyone.

A few common treatments include:

  • Tetanus booster shot.
  • Skin grafting or other reconstructive surgeries.
  • Cosmetic surgery on disfigured body parts
  • Water irrigation or other decontamination
  • Use of an IV, such as to administer medication and antibiotics.
  • Use of soothing creams and ointments to abate itching, burning, etc.
  • Various types of therapy, such as physical or occupational

Suing Over a Chemical Burn Injury

If another person’s negligence is to blame for your chemical burn injury, then you likely have a claim for compensation. You will need to prove this negligence to be successful in your claim.

A couple of examples of negligence in chemical burn accidents include:

  • Hazardous workplace conditions, such as if an employer fails to train their employees on how to handle toxic chemicals or fails to provide them with the necessary safety equipment; and
  • Household products with inadequate warning labels, such as if a product manufacturer fails to warn of a product’s toxicity level or fails to provide instructions for proper use.

Should you have reason to believe that another’s negligence led to your chemical burn, don’t wait to contact our experienced doctor-lawyers. We can discuss the details of your case in a free consultation.
