Burn injuries are more common in the United States than many people realize. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), on average, one person dies in a fire every two hours in the U.S., and one person suffers a burn injury every 23 minutes. Over 1.1 million burn injuries each year require medical attention.

The most common causes of burn injuries include:

  • House fires or open flames. Fire or flame cause 44 percent of all burn injuries each year. House fires started by defective items, open flames left unattended, and fires that start through negligence or carelessness can all result in these types of serious burns.
  • Scalding. Water that is too hot can cause a scalding burn, especially to children or elderly adults who have sensitive skin. Defective water-heating products or failure to pay attention to the temperature of hot beverages served can all cause scalding.
  • Hot objects. Many household appliances, from stoves to curling irons, must heat up in order to do their jobs. When they overheat, however, serious injuries can result.
  • Electrical burns. Any defective electrical item might cause an electrical burn. Burns might also be suffered through carelessness when handling electrical items or components or when carrying out repairs or maintenance on any electrical system.
