Federal Jury Slams Radiology Group with Unanimous $12 Million Verdict After Missed MRI Lesion Leads to Two-Year Cancer Misdiagnosis
March 24, 2026
On March 12, 2026, a federal jury in the United States District Court for the District of Nebraska returned a unanimous $12 million verdict for Shari Jensen and Jarel Jensen after finding that radiologists failed to report a clearly visible lesion on an MRI, resulting in a cancer misdiagnosis and more than two years of inappropriate treatment.
The verdict included $9 million awarded to Shari Jensen and $3 million to Jarel Jensen.
The jury found Radiologic Center, Inc. and radiologist Nick Nelson, M.D. responsible for failing to identify and report the abnormality on imaging studies. The defendants were represented by Robert Mooney and Mara Moore of Mooney, Lenaghan, Westberg Dorn, LLC.
The Jensen family was represented at trial by Patrick Cullan, M.D., J.D., and Joseph Cullan, M.D., J.D., of Cullan & Cullan, a firm nationally recognized for litigating complex medical negligence cases.
According to evidence presented during the trial, the MRI at issue contained a clearly visible lesion that was not reported by the interpreting radiologist. Because the lesion went unreported, Ms. Jensen’s cancer was misdiagnosed, and she underwent improper treatment for more than two years before the correct diagnosis was finally discovered.
Attorneys for the Jensen family argued that the failure to identify and report the lesion delayed appropriate diagnosis and treatment, causing substantial harm and protracted suffering.
After hearing testimony from medical experts and reviewing imaging studies and medical records, the federal jury deliberated for just over two hours before they unanimously found in favor of the Jensen family, returning the $12 million verdict following trial.
“This case should never have required a jury. The MRI showed a visible lesion, and the consequences of missing it were devastating. Unfortunately, the defendants simply refused to accept responsibility, leaving Shari with no choice but to seek justice in court,” said counsel for the Jensen family. “The jury’s verdict speaks for itself.”
