A new report by the inspector general of the United States Department of Health and Human Services has found that approximately 22,000 patients are injured and an additional 1,500 die in nursing homes every month. The investigation that lead to this finding also uncovered this shocking fact: 59 percent of these injuries and deaths are completely avoidable.

Nursing home abuse and neglect have long been known to exist, but the scope of these injustices is just now coming to light. The new report, issued in March of 2014, states that 1/3 of all nursing home patients are harmed by treatment, even when treatment takes place in a reputable and skilled care facility.

The best ways to prevent a loved one from falling victim to abuse or neglect are to carefully select a care facility and to make frequent unannounced visits. However, even these steps cannot always prevent mistreatment.
