Hygiene is a set of practices that includes thing such as proper sanitation and is intended to ensure healthy surroundings. Poor hygiene is any failure to put hygienic practices in place – an act of negligence that can endanger the lives of vulnerable nursing home residents.

Examples of inadequate hygienic practices include:

  • Improper waste disposal
  • Failure to disinfect surfaces
  • Inattention to possible contaminants and infections

In a nursing home setting, these things can lead to infectious diseases and illnesses, and result in serious, even fatal complications.

Poor Personal Hygiene

Many residents of nursing homes need assistance in maintaining personal hygiene. Nursing home staff should be properly trained to ensure residents are clean and dry at all times in order to guard against skin conditions and infections.

Signs of inadequate attention to the personal hygiene of residents include:

  • Soiled clothing or bedding
  • Crusted food on or around the body
  • Teeth or hair that have not been brushed
  • Smells of urine or feces

These issues indicate negligent care and should be brought to the attention of an experienced nursing home attorney immediately.
