9 Kansas City Facilities Named on Troubled Nursing Homes List

Abuse and neglect is an ongoing problem at many of the nation’s nursing homes, which often face a dangerous combination of staff shortages, limited oversight, and increasing elderly populations. In a show of transparency, the Centers for Medicare & Medicaid Services (CMS) recently released a list of their “Special Focus Facilities,” made up of the most troubled nursing homes in the country. Of these facilities, at least 9 of them are located in the Kansas City Metropolitan Area.

At Cullan & Cullan, our nursing home abuse attorneys have fought on behalf of injured Kansas City residents for many years now. As doctor-lawyers, we can bring unique insight to every case, including nursing home abuse instances where the abuse may be subtle and require strong medical knowledge to track. Applying over 40 years of experience, our team will work hard to secure appropriate compensation for your family’s losses.

About the Special Focus Facilities List

The Special Focus Facilities program was created by the CMS to indicate which homes are in danger of losing their Medicare certification. If a nursing home is included on the list, it means that facility has a long history of failing annual nursing home inspections, and that it could have serious staffing and oversight problems.

On March 4, 2019, U.S. Senators Pat Toomey and Robert Casey wrote to Administrator Seema Verma at CMS to ask for a comprehensive list of all current SFF participants. With the aim of gathering more information about how the SFF program operates, the Senators asked several questions about the size and scope of this program. In response to the Senators’ joint letter, the CMS finally released the SFF list to the public in June 2019.

Here are the 9 Kansas City nursing homes included on the list:

  1. Indian Creek Health Care Center, Overland Park
  2. Maple Wood Healthcare Center, Kansas City
  3. Edgewood Manor, Raytown
  4. Pinnacle Ridge Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, Olathe
  5. Garden Valley Healthcare Center, Kansas City
  6. Redwood of Raymore, Raymore
  7. Serenity Care and Rehab, Overland Park
  8. Kansas City Center for Rehabilitation and Nursing, Kansas City
  9. Hidden Lake Care Center, Raytown

Fighting for Elderly Residents’ Rights

From chronic understaffing to active neglect of seniors, there are any number of reasons why a nursing home might fall short of CMS requirements, and ultimately cause injury to their elderly residents. Regardless of the reason for this kind of negligence, however, our seniors deserve better from their nursing home facilities. If your loved one has been subject to abuse or neglect at a nursing home facility, the team at Cullan & Cullan can provide the compassionate counsel and ardent advocacy that you deserve.
