About the “Best Law Firms” Awards Process

U.S. News & World Report partnered with Best Lawyers® in 2009 to curate a list of the nation’s premier law firms. To earn a ranking in any edition of “Best Law Firms,” a practice must have at least one of its attorneys recognized in The Best Lawyers in America© for the specific legal area and geographic location the firm is contending for.

Then, firms are put to an in-depth, rigorous review in which client and lawyer evaluations are gathered, as is any information about a firm’s past successes and achievements. Leading attorneys also engage in a peer review of each firm pursuing a ranking in their practice area. Finally, collected data is converted into a “Best Law Firms” score, and the highest-scoring firms for each geographic location and practice area are placed within a three-tier system. The firms with the very highest scores land in Tier 1.
